The Why Not? Trust began in 2014 when Care Visions identified an unmet need for young people leaving its care services to have continuing, meaningful relationships with the people that matter to them, often their care professionals (Connectors). These relationships are built on trust and give self-belief to enable young people to be their best self. But for the vast majority of care leavers, their most meaningful relationship is cut off at the point of leaving care, when they are at their most vulnerable. Young people have voiced they want to be able to stay in touch with those important to them and care workers want to continue these relationships too.

This is where the Why Not? Trust comes in.

We enable these connections to continue in a healthy, facilitated way and by giving choice as to what the ongoing relationship will look like. Having a weekly phone call, or meeting for a coffee can mean so much to young people who have no other trusted adult in their lives. The sector has long discouraged relationships lasting past a young person’s time in care and we work to challenge this status quo. We have created a framework of legitimacy, which is underpinned by our Right to Relationships Charter and our unique relational approach. We remove barriers between young people and their carers, providing a safe, supportive network to enable these already established relationships to flourish and last beyond a young person leaving care. We currently support over 100 young care leavers and their Connectors, and we know we need, and can, do more for Scotland’s care experienced young people.

Through our partnership with Catalyst for Impact we will work to support many more connections and continuing relationships for young care leavers across Scotland and will grow our peer led community alongside where everyone can join in and be themselves. Catalyst for Impact’s support is also enabling us to focus on several distinct projects including developing our online hub and support for young care leavers within the criminal justice system. We are excited to be part of such an innovative portfolio and look forward to the journey ahead.
